John 8

Serpent Seed believers tend to use John 8 as a justification for their racism and as their “evidence” that Jesus taught Serpent Seed. Before you are deceived into believing what sounds like truth, there are several things you need to know about John 8 and Serpent Seed Doctrine.

Skipped Over and Ignored

“They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?” – John 8:33

This is the first time in John 8 that the Scribe and Pharisees are referred to as the “Abraham’s seed”. The Greek word translated as “seed” is sperma (Strong’s 4690). The word sperma only refers to “cereal” or “offspring/descendants”. It is clear that they are not cereal. This is the first verse that usually goes ignored.

“I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.” – John 8:37

This is the second verse that usually goes ignored by Serpent Seed believers. Once again we encounter the word sperma (Strong’s 4690) Jesus clearly acknowledges that the Scribes and Pharisees are the offspring/descendants of Abraham. The Strong’s plays an important role in establishing the context of Jesus’ words because Serpent Seed believers tend to twist and take the Bible out of context in order to prove their view.

Twisted and Taken Out of Context

“Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.” – John 8:41

Jesus is still talking to the Scribes and Pharisees. The important word here is “father”, which is the Greek word pater (Strong’s 3962), which can refer to a father in the physical sense or the spiritual sense. What we need to keep in mind here is context. Based on the Scribes’ and Pharisees’ response that their father is “God”, we know that Jesus was using the word pater in the spiritual sense and not the physical. Furthermore, the Bible tells us that Jesus is the only begotten of the Father (John 1:14), which also indicates they were not talking about physical lineage at this point. Who was Jesus referring to as their spiritual father?

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” – John 8:44

This is the verse the Serpent Seed believers use to convince people that Jesus was teaching that Jews were the offspring of Satan, but is it true? The first thing we need to look at is the phrase “of your father the devil”. The word “of” is the Greek word ek (Strong’s 1537) which is a Greek preposition that refers to the point from which action or motion proceeds (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Here is an example from scripture of how the word ek is used.

  • Revelation 7:14 – Here the word ek is translated as “out of” in reference to those that came out of great tribulation. Coming out of something is an action.

We can see from the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance and the example in Revelation 7:14 that the word “of” does not refer to their physical lineage and Jesus was not referring to their physical lineage. If we adopt the belief Jesus was referring to them as the literal offspring of Satan, that means He suddenly became confused and contradicted Himself between John 8:37 and John 8:44. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). Adopting this view also implies Jesus was not all knowing since He couldn’t decide if they were physical offspring of Abraham or Satan. Based on that alone, we know that He was referring to the physical in one verse and the spiritual in another.

The Actions of The Scribes and Pharisees

I made the claim that Jesus was referring to the action of the Pharisees and not their physical lineage when He told them, “ye are of your father the devil”. What actions were the Pharisees taking toward Jesus that verifies this premise?

“But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.” – John 8:40

The Scribes and Pharisees were seeking to kill Jesus. These were the actions that Jesus was referring to. Jesus also refers to another action of the Pharisees during His chastising of them.

“Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.” – John 8:55

Jesus clearly stated that the Pharisees were liars. Lying is an action, which once again connects to what Jesus previously stated about the Devil being the father of lies.

The First Murderer

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” – John 8:44

It’s important that we revisit this verse because Serpent Seed believers make the claim that Jesus is referring to Cain “the first murderer”. Once again, this verse is taken completely out of context. If we turn back to Genesis, we find that the first murder occurs in Genesis 3 and not Genesis 4. In the garden Satan could not physically cause harm to Adam and Eve so he had to figure out a way to murder them without touching them. By convincing Eve to commit suicide, it was Satan and not Cain that was guilty of the first murder. We currently have laws in the U.S. that reflect this premise. It is illegal to bully someone into committing suicide. It is also illegal to convince or assist someone in committing suicide. In addition to this, we have the following verse that verifies that Satan was violent long before Cain murdered Abel.

“By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.” – Ezekiel 28:16

We don’t know that details of the angelic rebellion but most agree that it involved a war between the angels. Wars are extremely violent, and since the war for heaven happened before Genesis 3, we know that Satan was violent long before he assisted Adam and Eve in their suicide.

Jesus also refers to Satan being a murderer from “the beginning”. Cain did not exist in the beginning, especially if the Gap Theory (Genesis 1:1-2) has any merit. According to some, this may have been when the fall of Satan occurred, causing the earth to “becomeĀ  (hayah) without form and void (tohu vavohu)”. Isaiah 45:18 is clear that God did not create the earth in “vain (tohu)”. Once again, in context, Jesus was most likely referring to events far prior to the birth of Cain.

When I study out the serpent seed doctrine, I too find contradictions. I do like listening to Pastor Arnold Murray’s teaching’s, but I am not convinced of this one. The more I study Genesis, the more open I am to the “Gap Theory.” Also, I am not a big pre-trib rapture Christian and I don’t know if P.A.M stance on the rapture is so true either. But, I am not sure any of it is that crucial to salvation. Pastor Arnold doesn’t seem to be a racist, if he were… I wouldn’t give him the time of day. I am well aware who he was mentored by, and I don’t think we have to agree with everything. Who is Jesus to him?(GOD) What is salvation?(GRACE) to God be the glory!!! Major on the Majors and minor on the Minors. I know we need to be watchman, and I am glad that you are. I love to read all your writings, and will continue to listen to P.A.M. even though I don’t agree with all he believes. I will only let the word of God guide me. He is a deep teacher, and I appreciate that. Keep up all your great work!!! Thanks!

The Gap Theory involves angels, not people, but Murray teaches it in a manner that validates his racism. He doesn’t believe races should mix and that every other race was created before Adam. He also teaches that only white people come from Adam and only they have souls. You may want to do some more looking into who you are following and what they teach.
