Was Cain the son of Adam as stated in scripture, or was he the son of Satan as stated by the Targum of Pseudo Jonathan (False Jonathan)? Serpent Seed or Seedline theory is a growing belief among Christians, but is there any truth to the claims that Adam was not the actual father of Cain? Today’s study was inspired by a question that I received from a reader:

“Minister Fortson, Have you or anyone ever noticed that in Gen 4 where it gives the lineage of Cain, that it NEVER says that any of them died, but in contrast, in Gen. 5 where it gives the lineage of Adam/Seth it states EVERY time that they DIED? Can you explain this?” – M. Rivers

The Descendants of Cain

Let’s start from the beginning of the chapter (Genesis 4:1) because that is where we are going to find the answer to a very common mislabeling among those that adhere to The Serpent Seed Theory.

“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.” – Genesis 4:1

If the Bible is the final authority for Christians, then it is crystal clear that the genealogy of Cain BEGINS with Adam, while Seth’s genealogy begins in Genesis 5:1.

Serpent Seed Fallacy #1

The first and biggest fallacy of Serpent Seed teachings is that “Cain doesn’t appear in the genealogy of Adam”. This is because Cain’s genealogy is presented as separate genealogy from Seth’s genealogy. However, when we look at the entirety of the Bible, we see that this is a normal occurrence:

  • Shem has his own genealogy without Ham and Japheth (Genesis 11:10).
  • Esau has his own genealogy without Jacob (Genesis 36)
  • Jacob has his own genealogy without Esau (Genesis 46)

There are more examples and it is 100% consistent with scripture to separate the genealogies of multiple son. Just because Cain does not appear in Seth’s genealogy in Genesis 5, it doesn’t mean that he’s not Adam’s son. Both genealogies are Adam’s genealogy.

Serpent Seed Fallacy #2

Often times Serpent Seed believers will attempt to make the claim that when the Bible says that Adam “knew” eve, he was simply acknowledging her or knowing her as a person. For those that attempt to twist the word “know” or “knew” into meaning Adam simply acknowledged Eve, instead of had sex with her, they run into a huge problem all over the Old Testament, because the same phrase is used in reference to having sex in other verses:

“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.” – Genesis 4:1

“And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.” – Genesis 4:17

“And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” – Genesis 4:25

“And they rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.” – 1 Samuel 1:19-20

Adam “knew” Eve before she conceived Cain. That same phrase is used to describe Seth’s conception, but with the addition of the word “again”. If again means there had to be a previous time, then the only previous mention that Adam “knew” Eve, was before the conception of Cain.

  • In order to correctly interpret scripture, we have to properly apply scripture consistently.
  • To claim that Adam was the father of Seth but not Cain, although the same wording is used, is both intellectually dishonest and scripturally inaccurate.

Serpent Seed Fallacy #3

Genesis 4:1 even goes so far as to say that Eve received Cain from the Lord. Those that adhere to The Serpent Seed Theory attempt to twist this by saying that “Lord” could refer to an angel, Satan, Sammael,  or Baal, but the Hebrew text completely destroys that LIE.

  • YHVH/YHWH – The proper name of God (Strongs #3068). This is the word translated as “Lord” in Genesis 4:1

Unless The Serpent Seed Theory believers are ready to call YHVH/YHWH and Satan the same being, there is no way around this verse which makes it completely clear that Cain did not come from Satan or Sammael. Before I get to the question about the deaths not being recorded, I’m going to answer the next question since the last question is the same as the first.

Were Cain and His Descendants Nephilim?

“Seems I remember somewhere that when the giants’ bodies died, their spirit lived on and was left on the earth…unredeemable. Is this what Cain and his seed were?” – M. Rivers

Based on Genesis 4:1 we can conclude that Cain was not conceived inside the garden, and was indeed the son of Adam, who Eve considered to be a blessing from God. In short, Cain was not a nephilim (half angel half human). He was a human male that committed the sin of murder (forgivable). The first murderer was no more or less guilty than the most recent murderer.

Serpent Seed Theory believers will often attempt to make it as if his sin carried more weight than any other sin, but it doesn’t. Another weak point in the Seedline Theory is that Cain is NEVER referred to as a Nephilim. Not even once. In fact, Cain obtains God’s mark of protection, which is something that is NEVER offered to the Nephilim.

“And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.” – Genesis 4:15

When we accept what the Bible says, it’s clear that this is a mark of protection. There are only two other places in scripture where God commands that His mark is placed on people, and both are a form of protection.

  • Ezekiel 9
  • Revelation 7

As part of the false teaching about Cain’s mark, there are claims that Cain was cursed with black skin. Feel free to read through the entire Bible, and you will see that there is no mention of the curse being black skin. This is a belief that was created and embraced by racists to justify their racism and hatred.

Why Aren’t The Deaths of Cain’s Descendants Recorded?

“Is this why it NEVER mentions them dying? It makes NO sense for it to be recorded in Adam/Seth’s lineage, but never in Cain’s. I can’t wait for your response to this one!!!” – M. Rivers

If we read all of Genesis 5, there are quite a few people that the Bible never mentions dying. Let’s look at a few of those examples from just this chapter:

“And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:” – Genesis 5:4

“And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:” – Genesis 5:7

In fact, after the flood there’s a huge list of unrecorded Sethite deaths, because everyone after the flood was a descendant of Seth.

  • Ham
  • Japheth
  • Nimrod
  • Benjamin (Israel’s son)
  • Judah (Israel’s son)

In fact, most of the sons of Jacob are never recorded as dying, neither is his daughter Dinah, and all of them were from the line of Seth. The rest of Genesis 5 continues in the same fashion with other sons and daughters being born, but not named, and their deaths left unrecorded.

If we assume that an unrecorded death means they were Nephilim, then we would have to apply that interpretation to everyone throughout scripture with an unrecorded death.

The Real Nail In The Serpent Seed Coffin

Even if we disregard everything above, we still have the issue of Noah’s flood. The Bible is clear that only eight humans survived. Unfortunately, there are people that love to try to make up all kinds of scenarios so that Cain’s lineage survive the flood, but it doesn’t.

“Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” – 1 Peter 3:20

In Hebrew culture, all lineage is traced through the father, and since Noah and his sons were all Sethites, every child born to them was considered a Sethite as well. Nobody from Cain’s lineage survived Noah’s flood. Not one.

The Breakdown

The fact remains that most of this confusion can be cleared up by sticking to the Bible until we have a solid Biblical foundation and we know enough to separate sound doctrine from complete nonsense.

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive…” – Ephesians 4:14

1 St Chronicles 2:55. read it. Then take the word “Kenite” as it is used there, go to the prime (Strongs number 7014). Then form your own conclusions (probably a futile attempt to put new wine in your new bottle lest it break) as to whether Cain’s posterity made it through the flood.

    • Minister Fortson

Hilarious how the Murry cult always think they are “teaching” people something new or that their false teaching is actually “pearls”. You guys are such a joke.

With that said, I have a full study on the Kenites coming soon and it blows away the false teaching that the Murray cult pushes. They were not descendants of Cain because ONLY Sethites survived. To say otherwise is to call the Bible a lie. Stay tuned to have your old bottles filled with new wine. Yeah… you got the metaphor wrong. New wine is always put in new bottles LOL

Minister Fortson, great to meet you sir. So in your concluding remarks, after noah’s flood there is no record in scripture of Cain’s descendants or bloodline recorded. Are there any text examples. Thankyou.

    • Minister Fortson

None. They all died in the flood. Serpent Seed believers then need to make up some nonsense about Ham’s wife to keep their absurd theory going. They then just toss out paternal lineage because Ham is a Sethite, which makes his kids Sethites as well.
