Special thanks to King Wells for pointing me to this critique of Tom Horn’s work (click here). While I do not agree with everything that Tom Horn writes, Dr. Burns shows that she is very uneducated in certain matters of scripture. I do happen to agree with the majority of her critique, but there are a few parts that stood out to me where her information is lacking.
“P.184—Horn writes: “…Gilgamesh (the two-thirds god and one-third human child of Lugalbanda and Ninsun).” How can this be possible? A child is 1/2 of each parent, not 1/3 and 2/3. Furthermore, angels are not gods so even if Gilgamesh were an offspring from an angel, he still couldn’t be 2/3 god (or even 1/2 god). It’s impossible!”
This is the first place we encounter a problem. A person can be 1/3 and 2/3 mixture. If one parent is full black, for example, and the other parent is half black and half Asian, the resulting child would be 2/3 black and 1/3 Asian. Even in conversation people refer to themselves as a quarter of this or twenty percent that. Concerning her statement, “angels are not gods”, she is sadly mistaken. Tom Horn’s position and mine as well is that these angels were referred to as gods by the pagans. They interpreted what these angels were based on their spiritual belief and understanding. In this sense, the fallen angels of the Bible and the gods of “mythology” are the exact same thing.
“We need to remember that those who teach the Nephilim theory claim that these creatures are without souls.”
This statement is absolutely false. I teach the Nephilim theory and I do not make the above claim. Many of us ACTUALLY believe that instead of human souls they are demonic spirits. All encompassing statements like the above only serve to spread completely false information about entire groups of people. If she doesn’t actually understand what we believe, she should remain silent on that specific subject.
“P.182—Horn states: “…the giants of the Old Testament, such as Goliath, were the part-human, part-animal, part-angelic offspring of a supernatural interruption into the divine order and natural evolution of the species.” Where’s the Scriptural reference for such a fantastical claim? The Bible calls Goliath a “man” (Hebrew: iysh) in I Samuel 17:24, 25, and 33.”
Not that I agree with Tom Horn here, but Dr. Burns once again shows her lack of Biblical understanding. Goliath is constantly referred to as a “giant” in English and a descendant of “Rapha” in Hebrew. Rapha is the singular of the word Rephaim, which we find all throughout the Old Testament. A quick study in the beliefs surrounding the Rephaim is that they were part human and part angel. In addition to this, Isaiah 26:14 states the following:
“They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.” – Isaiah 26:14
Young’s Literal Translation renders the verse as follows:
“Dead — they live not, Rephaim, they rise not, Therefore Thou hast inspected and dost destroy them, Yea, thou destroyest all their memory.” – Isaiah 26:14 YLT
The word used in this verse is Strong’s #7497, which is defined as “spirits, shades, ghosts”. There is also the context problem in that they will not participate in the resurrection of the dead, since that is the context of Isaiah 26:14-21. If the Rephaim are just normal people why would the Rephaim not rise (v14) in comparison with the dead men that do rise (v19)? The Rephaim were never believed by the Hebrews to be just normal men.
“P.187—Horn writes that Noah was perfect. He adds: “The meaning was not that Noah was morally perfect, but that his physical makeup—his DNA—had not been contaminated with nephilim descent, as apparently the rest of the world had become. In order to preserve mankind as He had made them, God destroyed all but Noah’s family in the Flood.” This just isn’t true at all.”
Here the Dr. is wrong, but so is Horn. The reference to Noah they are referring to is found in Genesis 6:9.
“These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.” – Genesis 6:9
Horn is right in the fact that the word “perfect” does refer to the physical. The Hebrew word used is tamiym (spotless, without defect), which refers to physical perfection. However, the Hebrew word for “just” is tsaddiq, which means “righteous, blameless, innocent”. There is nothing in the Bible that prevents Noah and his family from being spared for both moral and physical reasons. Either way, it still ties into God’s grace and mercy because He did not have to spare them at all, regardless of their physical or moral condition.
“P.190—Horn writes: “Former college professor and BBC correspondent, Dr. I. D. E. Thomas, in his highly recommended book, The Omega Conspiracy, chronicled the burgeoning of so-called ‘alien abduction’ activity and tied it to end-time prophecy concerning the return of the nephilim….and led Thomas to conclude that the identity of the Watchers and whoever the alien entities are were somehow connected.” Notice that the aliens (who are often described as about three-foot creatures) are somehow connected to the nephilim (who are supposedly extremely gigantic creatures). How do we go from such humongous creatures to tiny 3-4 foot creatures and claim they are connected? Also, where can you find “alien abductions” in Genesis 6?”
The Dr. is once again misinformed. The Greys (alien) are usually reported as three to four feet tall, but she neglects to mention the Nordics which are often described as six feet tall and look no different than normal humans. There are also the reports of Reptilians, and various other beings of normal height. It is my personal belief that all reports of alien abduction are actually fallen angels PRETNEDING to be something that they are not. People in the modern age are INTERPRETING these supernatural events as extraterrestrial based on their own naturalistic understanding of the supernatural.
Further research would reveal to the Dr. that according to many reports the Greys seem to be mechanical in nature, which gives rise to the theory that the body is a means of housing a spirit or consciousness. This is not the stuff of Christian fringe, but from WITHIN the UFO community. In the TV series Stargate SG-1 the Asgard, which are Greys, are mechanical clones used to house a consciousness in order to allow them live forever and function in the physical realm. Again, this is a teaching from within the UFO community, and there is nothing in the Bible that would prevent this interpretation from being applied to demonic spirits needing a place to inhabit. In the New Testament we find demons inhabiting humans and animals, and according to Hebrew legend, they were capable of inhabiting objects as well. So a study of the Nephilim-Grey connection reveals that there is no need for a genetic connection in order for there to be a connection between the two.
“P.214—Horn writes: “…an incredible tenet emerges—that Satan has seed, and that it is at enmity with Christ.” Here we see the “serpent seed’ idea (as on P.82).”
Satan having a seed is not the same as Serpent Seed. Once again, the Dr. shows her lack of understanding. Satan having a seed that will come to be known as the Antichrist is much different than the Serpent Seed Theory which teaches that Cain was the son of Satan and Eve, and that every race except for the white man came from that union. They are two completely different teachings. One is used to examine the origin of the Antichrist and the other is used to promote racism.
“The Flood DID NOT occur between 2800 and 2900 BC BASED ON THE SCRIPTURES THEMSELVES.”
Not true at all. I too have done research on the flood and the date of 2800 – 2900BC is more widely accepted than the more recent date of 2,344BC. How can there be almost a 500 – 600 year difference in timing? There is over a 400 year gap between Genesis and Exodus which is rarely accounted for. The most commonly accepted date for the writings of Moses are around 1,400BC. When we add in the 400 year bondage in Egypt, that would take us to 1,800BC (roughly). This only leaves 544 years between Noah after the flood and Joseph’s death, which we can clearly see is not the case. There are 286 years from Noah to Abraham, which leaves only 214 from Abraham’s birth to Joseph’s death. When we consider that almost 100 of those years went by before Abraham had a child, it reduces the time to 114 years from the birth of Isaac to the death of Joseph. When we conclude that Joseph died at age 110, he would have had to have been born 4 years after Isaac for her timeline to fit. We know that the timeline is as follows:
- Abraham -> Isaac -> Jacob -> Joseph
In my book, As The Days of Noah Were I lay out a full timeline using the Biblical data, which proves that there is no way that the flood could have occurred around 2,344BC. She is indeed right that the flood occurs 1,656 years after the creation of Adam, but that is where her timeline fails. There are other missing pieces of data as well, such as, how old was Boaz when Obed was born? How old was Obed when Jesse was born? How old was Jesse when David was born? There is also the period to account for from Joshua to the Judges and from the Judges to Saul. Major pieces of the timeline are lost until we get closer to more modern times. When we account for those missing pieces, the date of the flood get pushed further back.
“Inca mythology involving giants, followed by world deluge, agree with similar legends from the Maya, Olmec, and Aztec cultures of Mexico. These stories are consistent with Sumerian and Hebrew accounts of the Flood and of the giant nephilim….” (Emphasis added.) How can such a story be CONSISTENT with the Bible (the Hebrew account of the flood) when it differs greatly from the Bible account?”
There are over 500 flood stories from around the world that are consistent with the Bible in the MAJOR points, but differ in minor areas such as how long it lasted, how many people were saved, what kind of vessel was used, how many animals etc. However, they all agree that the flood came out of anger, some people were spared, some animals were spared, and the devastation was worldwide.
“P.319—He then quotes from a Greek legend to “prove” Giants built megalithic structures: “The Jinn were before Adam: They built huge cities whose ruins still stand in forgotten places.” The Bible clearly tells us that Adam was the first man. The first city recorded in the Bible was built by Cain (see Genesis 4:17).”
The Jinn were not humans, but are more equivalent to our version of angels. Adam being the first man has no bearing on what angels may have done prior to him. Furthermore, the Bible records Cain as building a city, but it never says he built the first city. In my opinion, the Dr. needs to brush up on much of her research before attempting to address so many topics at once. In some areas she is right on point, such as her observations about the book of Jasher, and her observations about the Appolo/Osiris/Nimrod connection, but in others she is as far off base as she can be.
