For many that hold the Christian faith, the creation of heaven and earth begins in the book of Genesis. Although Genesis 1:1 does state, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”, it is in the book of Proverbs that we find a creative act that predates the Genesis account.
“I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.” – Proverbs 8:23-26
Throughout Proverbs 8 we see Wisdom portrayed as a living being. There are some that believe that Wisdom was not created, but simply pre-existing with God. However, there are a few things in the chapter that indicate Wisdom is a creation of God.
- Wisdom is referred to as female, but God is only depicted as male. (Proverbs 8:1)
- Wisdom claims to have been “brought forth”. (Proverbs 8:24)
- Wisdom refers to God as a separate being. (Proverbs 8:27)
When we look at Proverbs 8, we can clearly see that Wisdom and God are not one and the same. With Wisdom being the first creation of God, it also implies that God’s knowledge exceeds Wisdom. When we speak of Wisdom in the human sense, it is usually a compliment in the highest degree, and it is usually associated with old age. When we look at the actual order of creation, Wisdom comes first on the list. We know that Wisdom was created before Genesis 1:1 because Proverbs 8 states that Wisdom was brought forth before the following:
- The earth (Proverbs 8:23)
- Depths and fountains (Proverbs 8:24)
- The mountains and hills (Proverbs 8:25)
- The heavens (Proverbs 8:26)
Again we see that Wisdom claims to have been brought forth before both heaven and earth. By understanding this, we can better understand that God does things decently and in order. Before angels, demons, or mankind were brought forth, God created the highest form of knowledge that could be attained. Throughout the Bible Wisdom is spoken of as something everyone should seek to attain, and because Wisdom witnessed the creative acts of God (Proverbs 8:30) we can better know our Creator the wiser we become.
